Immigration Policy in the 21st Century - Panel Discussion

Immigration Policy in the 21st Century was the topic of a three-person panel discussion at the LWVUS Council 2007. The panel featured: Donald Kerwin, Executive Director, Catholic Legal Immigration Network; Doris Meissner, Senior Fellow, Migration Policy Institute; and Frank Sharry, Executive Director of National Immigration Forum.

From Irene Bloemraad:

Dr. Irene Bloemraad, sociology professor at University of California-Berkeley is an immigration specialist. She recently spoke at the LWVCA convention in California and has generously shared the slide show from her talk with us. Click here to view the PowerPoint slide show. This is very informative, giving many statistics and a perspective on immigration.  It also addresses the differing proposed legislation in Congress this Spring.

Bloemraad’s faculty home page is here http://sociology.berkeley.edu/faculty/bloemraad/ --with lots of good sources and resources.

Bloemraad’s syllabus for her graduate course on immigration.

Article by Bloemraad: “Immigrant Citizenship in the United States and Canada: Explaining the Difference” based on her book, Becoming a Citizen (2006).

She recommends these two books to get started:

                    Zolberg, Arisitide

                    A Nation by Design

                    Portes, Alejandro and Ruben Rumbaut

                    Immigrant America, 3rd edition.
